EIFS Stucco: insulation performance.
PROS:
- EIFS delivers an R-value of .07-.09 per inch (1.05 R-value at residential standard 1.5′ foam).
- Traditional stucco at industry-standard 3/4″ thickness registers a mere .02 R-value.
- Commercial EIFS applications range from 2″ to 5′ thickness with proportionally higher insulation factors.
- Drives energy costs down.
- Uses less water during installation. Non-biodegradable.
- More aesthetic: elegant & modern look to your building envelope.
- Uses acrylic aggregate finish: currently the most popular stucco finish for Calgary building and homes.
- If you opt for sand & cement system with acrylic finish without the insulation, it will prevent woodpecker from pecking and nesting in.
Cons:
- Pricier than sand & cement stucco system: currently between $12-$16 per sqft.
- Prone to woodpecker damage. Woodpecker leverage the foam to nest in.
- Repairs will look patchy and harder to blend in when repairing an larger area.
Pro tip: always opt for ADEX A/B woodpecker-proof stucco system for insulated stucco system. It’s worth the extra cost. Otherwise, you’ll end up with patchy stucco and pay for repairs.

Premix 1000 finish: wavy texture/California finish.
PROS:
- Uses tar paper and wire system.
- Uses sand and cement as substrate under Premix 1000 finish.
- Stucco repairs to this system blend better with existing stucco siding (texture and colour wise).
- Woodpeckers can’t nest in as they can’t peck into cementitious substrate.
- Wavy texture is actually appealing to many homeowners in Calgary.
- Cheaper than acrylic stucco finish by $3-$5 less per sqft.
Cons:
- It’s more labour intensive.
- Uses more water than acrylic stucco system.
- Not being used much in new constructions. Could be eventually discontinued similar to rock dash stucco system.
